Biography and Concept

Matt Mullican, born in 1951 in Santa Monica, California, has collected photographs, objects, and all manner of things he finds, ever since he first began to create works of art. Nowadays he locates many of his materials online. Concerned with systems of knowledge, meaning and signification as well as with the relationship between perception and reality, Mullican has devised a five-part classification system as a means to an understanding and order of the world, which relies on the methods of encyclopedias and social anthropology. With his paintings, films, flags, sculptures, drawings, neons, stained glass works, photographs, light boxes and so-called rubbings, Mullican aims to examine subjective perception and non-verbal languages and thus confronts fundamental questions about human existence and thought.

Matt Mullican graduated from the California Institute of Arts (CalArts) in Valencia in 1974, where he had been a student of John Baldessari. Mullican himself has taught and lectured at Columbia University, The School of Visual Arts, New York, The Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, The London Institute, Chelsea College of Art and Design, England and Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg, Germany.
