Richard Artschwager

Richard Artschwager was an american sculptor and painter. Starting out in the 1950s with the making and selling of furniture, Artschwager soon began pursuing his passion for art by producing sculptures, paintings, drawings and other objects. In his work, he challenges preconceived ideas of two-dimensional images and three-dimensional works, utilizing everyday materials such as Formica and insulation. His work is often associated with Pop Art, Minimalism, and conceptual art.

Artschwager was awarded many prestigious awards such as the Award for Excellence in Design, New York (2009), the Wolfgang-Hahn-Preis der Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst am Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2005) and the Roswitha Haftmann-Prize, Zurich (2007). He also became a member of the Academy of Arts and Letters, New York (2002), as well as the National Academy of Design, New York (2012). Artschwager received much critical acclaim during his lifetime and his works have been included in many publications and exhibitions. He was included several times in the Documenta, Kassel (1968, 1972, 1982, 1987, 1992) and the Venice Biennale (1976; 1997; 1980). His work has been shown in countless solo exhibitions such as at ational Musée Noveau, Monaco (2012), Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis (2006), Tang Museum, New York (2006), Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2003). He took part in many institutional group-shows at Whitney Museum of American Art (2015), Deichtorhallen, Hamburg (2011), Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2009), Museum of Modern Art, New York (2006), Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (2004), Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporaine, Geneva (2002). Biography and Concept

Richard Artschwager was an american sculptor and painter. Starting out in the 1950s with the making and selling of furniture, Artschwager soon began pursuing his passion for art by producing sculptures, paintings, drawings and other objects.
