David Reed

David Reed, born in 1946 in San Diego, is an American abstract painter. His paintings often involve a long and complex technical process, combining traditional painting techniques with the use of laser cut stencils that are produced using digital image processing. Reed’s paintings are the result of the artist’s interest in and extensive knowledge of the history of European and American painting, ranging from the Italian Renaissance and European Baroque to American Pop Art, Photorealism, Minimalism, and Abstract Expressionism. In Reed’s often asymmetrical compositions, the large, premeditated painterly gesture of the brushstroke appears as a figure superimposed onto monochromatic grounds. Working with elongated, mostly horizontal formats, Reed’s works previously have been associated with new media formats including photography and film.

Reed’s work has been exhibited in numerous international solo and group exhibitions. David Reed has been awarded the Ursula Blickle Foundation Art Award (2001) and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (1988). In recent years major solo exhibitions include the Peréz Art Museum Miami and the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University (2016), Hamburger Bahnhof showing Reed’s work alongside works by Mary Heilmann (2015), Haus Lange in Krefeld (2015), and the Kunstmuseum Bonn (2014). Recent group exhibitions include the Kienzle Art Foundation, Berlin (2016), Museum Brandhorst, Munich (2015), Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein (2015), The American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York (2014), Kunstmuseum St. Gallen (2014), Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (2014), The Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Stockholm (2014), FRAC, Clermont-Ferrand (2013), Bregenzer Kunstverein (2013), and MUMOK, Vienna (2010). Reed’s work is included in several public collections, including the Birmingham Museum of Art, Centre Georges Pompidou, Cincinnati Art Museum, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt a.M., MUMOK, Vienna, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. David Reed lives and works in New York City

Biography and Concept
