Artists

Bernhard Martin

Bernhard Martin’s paintings are often influenced by literature or film and invoke the Comédie humaine of Honoré de Balzac. For Martin, they have become a Comédie urbaine, a central theme which the artist has been developing for decades. As a subtheme, Martin has recently introduced a so-called “hotel cycle” – a series of scenes depicting the modern mobile, transient, and consumerist society. Martin seeks to portray an image of society which he believes “has become sick with its own rules and cannot find satisfactory answers to questions about power, love, jealousy, and longing and as a way out chooses cynicism, double standards, and self-indulgence”. In his paintings, Martin assumes an objective position, seeking to avoid the reproduction of social hierarchies. His paintings can be understood as psychological and philosophical observations, in which the artist’s perspectives on environment, technology, politics, gender, class struggle, economy, and the virtual, the depths of the human soul, transgressions, paradoxes, and phantasms, are all translated into his visual vocabulary.

Bernhard Martin was awarded the Fred Thieler Prize for Painting in 2015. In 2008 he received the Art Award “Junge Stadt sieht Junge Kunst” of the City of Wolfsburg and in 2003 the scholarship of Villa Arson in Nice, France. Notable solo presentations include the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin (2015), Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg (2008/09), Internationale Stiftung Mozarteum, Salzburg (2006), the Arario Museum in Seoul (2006), Villa Arson, Nice (2005), MAMCO, Geneva (2002), and P.S.1, New York (2001). Additionally, Martin has participated in many group shows, both nationally and internationally, including the Hamburger Kunstverein (2015/16), Haus am Lützowplatz, Berlin (2014), KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2013), Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2013), Drawing Room, London (2011), La Kunsthalle Mulhouse, Mulhouse (2010), Shedhalle Zürich, Zurich (2009), Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2008), Kunsthalle Mannheim (2006), ZKM, Karlsruhe (2005), Museum der Moderne, Salzburg (2005), Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich (2004), and Frankfurter Kunstverein (2003). Martin’s works are included in several collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Geneva, the Rubell Collection, Miami, MoMA, New York, Deutsche Bank Collection, Frankfurt a.M. and the Arario Museum in Beijing.
