Robert Wilson was born in Waco, Texas. Wilson has recently created a series of more than 150 video portraits over the span of just a few years. In the these videos, select celebrities of film, theater, and opera, as well as unknown people are displayed with the utmost expressions of empathy.
The entire movies and pictures are of a clearly surreal nature, reminiscent in their color to the works of Pop Art.
The wide array of video portraits, which were shown in numerous international museum exhibitions, were also on display at shows at ZKM in Karlsruhe (2010), Hamburger Kunsthalle and at Sammlung Falckenberg in Hamburg (2009/10), the National Museum of Singapore (2008), the Danish Museum of Decorative Art, Copenhagen (2000), and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (1998).
He has also been represented in group shows at the Hamburger Kunsthalle (2010) and the Museum of Art in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Wilson has repeatedly been awarded prizes in tribute to his artistic and architectural oeuvre, including the Thomas Jefferson Award of the American Institute of Architects (2002), The Politika Grand Prix Award (Woyzeck) from the Belgrade International Theatre (2002), as well as the BZ Culture Award, Berlin (1993).
The artist lives and works in New York City.
